Welcome to Chess, Comics and Crosswords, a blog about books and the pleasures of reading. Here you'll find reviews, reflections and recommendations on books and the reading life.
I founded Chess, Comics and Crosswords in 2009 to write about books and comics, films and television, and occasionally other pursuits. More often than not, however, I find myself returning to books and comics, including the simple joys of discovering, browsing and buying them.
The blog's name is a nod to three pursuits that have been with me since childhood. I grew up playing chess, reading comics and solving crosswords, and in many ways all three have shaped the way I read, think and write—and how I spend time outside my day job.
I read widely and review books as often as time allows. Westerns are my first love, followed by mystery and detective fiction, espionage thrillers, political suspense, the classics, and general fiction—though I rarely read in any particular order. I also read nonfiction books.
A few years ago, I co-founded pocketfulofhappiness.com with my wife—a feel-good site that is, in temperament, quite different from this one. Do check it out.
